EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of Anadyr', a settlement established in northeastern Russia on the Bering Sea in 1889. The image, titled "Laying the Foundation for a House, 19 July, 1889," is from an album that documents the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the settlement. The album, which belonged to Emperor Nicholas II, offers a unique glimpse into the frontier life of the late 19th century. The photograph shows a group of men, dressed in heavy coats and hats, gathered around a mound of earth. One man, wearing a white shirt and holding a long stick, stands at the center, ready to lay the foundation stone. The other men, likely local workers, look on, some with their hands in their pockets, others with curious expressions. The scene is set against a backdrop of a barren, rocky landscape, with the sea visible in the distance. The laying of the foundation marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Anadyr', a settlement that would grow to become an important trading post and administrative center in the region. The photograph is a testament to the determination and hard work of the settlers who braved the harsh Arctic conditions to build a new community. Today, Anadyr' is the administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, a remote and beautiful region known for its unique culture and natural beauty. This photograph is a valuable historical record of a pivotal moment in the settlement's history and a reminder of the human spirit of perseverance and innovation.
