EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Lieutenant Theodore G. Ellyson of the United States Navy is seen conducting tests on a seaplane over the Potomac River in 1911. Ellyson, who was the first U.S. Navy officer to be designated as an aviator, played a pivotal role in the experimental development of aviation in the Navy. The image was captured by renowned photography studio Harris & Ewing, whose collection is now part of the Library of Congress. Ellyson's pioneering work in naval aviation earned him the distinction of being named "Naval Aviator No. 1." During World War I, he was awarded the Navy Cross for his service in antisubmarine operations. Tragically, Ellyson lost his life in 1928 when his aircraft crashed over the Chesapeake Bay. The photograph shows Ellyson in the cockpit of a biplane, wearing a leather helmet and goggles, as he prepares for takeoff. The seaplane, with its large wings and pontoons, is anchored to the riverbed using "spuds" to keep it stable. The Potomac River, a major geographical feature in the eastern United States, serves as the backdrop for this innovative scene. This image is a testament to the groundbreaking work in aviation that took place during the early 20th century. It is a reminder of the courage and determination of pioneering aviators like Lieutenant Theodore G. Ellyson, who pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the realm of flight. The Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress is an invaluable resource for scholars, historians, and anyone interested in the history of aviation and the United States Navy. This photograph is just one of the many treasures housed in this remarkable collection.
