Her Majesty laying the Foundation-Stone of the New Military Hospital at Hamble, near Southampton, 1856. Ceremony at the Royal Victoria Hospital:.the commanding Engineer presented to her Majesty [Queen Victoria] the plans of the building. Her Majesty having signified her approval of them, they were placed in the copper box prepared for the purpose, together with the coins, medals, and cross, and the vellum document recording the event. The Queen tried the stone with the plummet and level, and tapped it in the usual form, taking counsel with Lord Panmure as to the correct and truly masonic method of doing so...We much regret to add that as the gun-boats saluted the laying of the foundation-stone a gun of the Hardy prematurely went off; two seamen were blown to pieces, and several others were injured'. In this engraving, Her Majesty Queen Victoria is depicted laying the foundation stone of the new Military Hospital at Hamble, near Southampton, in 1856. The Queen, dressed in elegant Victorian attire, is shown wearing a white dress with a dark shawl draped over her shoulders, and a black bonnet adorned with a white feather. She is surrounded by military officers, including Lord Panmure and Fox Maule Ramsay, the 11th Earl of Dalhousie and Commander-in-Chief of the Army. The scene takes place on a construction site, with workers in military uniforms and men in overalls preparing the ground for the foundation. A banner bearing the insignia of the Royal Victoria Hospital is visible in the background, along with a large British flag and several smaller flags. The commanding engineer presents the plans of the building to the Queen, who approves them and places them in a copper box along with coins, medals, and a cross. The Queen then tries the stone with a plumb line and level, tapping it in the traditional masonic method. Unfortunately, as the gun-boats salute the laying of the foundation stone, a premature explosion from one of the Hardy gun-boats causes two seamen to be blown to pieces and several others to be injured. This poignant moment in history was recorded in the Illustrated London News, providing a glimpse into the ceremonial proceedings of the time and the importance of the construction of the new Military Hospital at Hamble.
