The New Houses of Parliament - the Peers Private Entrance, 1857. Creator: Unknown

The New Houses of Parliament - the Peers Private Entrance, 1857. Daylight is admitted by four windows from Old Palace-yard front...The floor is all of encaustic tiles, of the same pattern as that on the Peers Staircase. In this room the members of the House of Lords will deposit their cloaks and overcoats. Racks of brass, gilt...will be placed at intervals along the room. We agree with the art-critic in the "Companion to the Almanack, " that this lobby or entrance-room "is an excellent example of the artistic treatment of a low room so as to negative what would otherwise be the defiency [sic] of height. The effect of the piers and arches which are introduced for this end, and the grouping of the wall decorations and chimney-piece, cannot be too highly praised. Few architects have shown the same artistic power as Sir Charles Barry...". From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1857, showcases the Peers' Private Entrance to the New Houses of Parliament, an architectural marvel designed by Sir Charles Barry. The entrance is bathed in natural light from four windows, illuminating the floor of encaustic tiles, the same pattern as the Peers' Staircase. Upon entering, members of the House of Lords would deposit their cloaks and overcoats in this lobby or entrance-room. Brass and gilt racks were installed at intervals along the room to accommodate their belongings. The art critic from the "Companion to the Almanack" praised the artistic treatment of this low room, which aimed to counteract the perceived deficiency of height. The piers and arches, as well as the grouping of the wall decorations and chimney-piece, were highly commended for their effect. Barry's artistic vision for the New Houses of Parliament was groundbreaking, and this entrance-room is a testament to his innovative design. The intricate details and thoughtful consideration for functionality and aesthetics make this an exceptional example of Victorian architecture.
