"Origin of the Corinthian Capital" - by P. Leyendecker, from the exhibition in the French Gallery, Pall-Mall, 1876. On the death of a young maid...her lover gathered the ornaments she had most valued...and placed them in a wicker basket, covered by a tile, upon her grave...an acanthus had taken root, and its graceful leaves shooting forth...twined round the basket and reverted beneath the tile in the form of volutes. Attracted by the beauty of the acanthus growth...Callimachus, the sculptor, and reputed inventor of the Corinthian order, made it the basis, or "motif, " for the capital...the tile forming the abacus, the foliage the volutes, and the whole forming the summit of the elegant column which is the chief characteristic of the final development of Greek architecture...Unfortunately for the romantic story, there were Corinthian capitals previous to the time of Callimachus - i.e. about 540 B.C.'. Origin of the Corinthian Capital
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating artwork by Paul Leyendecker, showcased at the French Gallery in Pall-Mall during the exhibition of 1876. The image, now a historical treasure, depicts a romantic and imaginative origin story of the Corinthian capital in Greek architecture. The scene is set by the death of a young maiden, whose lover, in his grief, gathers her most cherished ornaments and places them in a wicker basket, covering it with a tile, and sets it upon her grave. As time passes, an acanthus plant takes root and begins to grow around the basket. Its graceful leaves twine round the basket and revert beneath the tile, forming the volutes that would later become the defining feature of the Corinthian capital. The story continues with Callimachus, the reputed inventor of the Corinthian order, being attracted by the beauty of the acanthus growth. He takes inspiration from the scene and creates the Corinthian capital, with the tile forming the abacus, the foliage the volutes, and the whole forming the summit of the elegant column. Regrettably, the romantic tale of the Corinthian capital's origin is not entirely accurate. Corinthian capitals existed before the time of Callimachus, around 540 B.C. Nonetheless, the story remains a captivating and enduring myth in the history of Greek architecture. This artwork, "Origin of the Corinthian Capital" by Paul Leyendecker, is a testament to the power of imagination and the enduring allure of ancient Greek culture. It continues to inspire and intrigue scholars and enthusiasts alike, reminding us of the rich history and beauty of the classical world.
