EDITORS COMMENTS
an exquisite lithograph by Ivan Dem'ianovich Bulychev, captures a moment in time from the late 1850s during an expedition to Kamchatka, Eastern Siberia. The image, part of a collection of 64 finely drawn illustrations in Bulychev's album "A journey across eastern Siberia: Part 1, Trip to Kamchatka," documents the diverse landscapes, towns, and people encountered during this exploration. In this evocative scene, a pair of pack horses rests beneath the shade of trees, their saddles laden with provisions for the journey ahead. The horses stand still, their weary bodies reflecting the arduous terrain they have traversed. The scene is a testament to the importance of these animals in the exploration and settlement of Siberia and the Russian Far East.
