EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Kurrachee Harbour, also known as Karachi Harbour, during the Anglo-Persian War of 1857. The image, titled 'The Persian Expedition - Minora Point and Lighthouse,' is an engraving from the Illustrated London News, showcasing the harbor's scenic beauty and the strategic importance it held during the conflict. The print offers a panoramic view of the harbor, with the principal focus on Minora Point and its lighthouse. The lighthouse, a beacon of safety for seafarers, stands proudly on the projecting point of land, guiding ships through the treacherous waters of the Arabian Sea. The harbor is bustling with activity, with numerous boats and dhows anchored, and some preparing to embark, transporting people and supplies. The church with its large, ugly tower is a prominent feature of the town, serving as a landmark for entering the harbor. The 2nd Europeans had taken refuge in Kurrachee during the attack and capture of Bushire (Bushehr), and many of them were suffering from fever. Seventy men of the 1st Fusiliers had been transferred to them for support. The print offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Middle East during the 19th century, a time when the British Empire was expanding its influence in the region. The naval battle in the Persian Gulf played a crucial role in the Anglo-Persian War, and this print serves as a visual reminder of the strategic importance of Kurrachee Harbour during that time. The intricate wood engraving beautifully captures the essence of the scene, transporting us back in time to witness a moment in history.
