The Piraeus, at Athens, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Piraeus, at Athens, [Greece], 1850. The [port of] Piraeus is not large, but it is very snug. The entrance is particularly narrow, so that the channel for ships of considerable burden has had to be marked out by stone piers. On the shores of the harbour is a considerable town, comprising many good houses, as well as branches of the consular establishments, and the unfailing Lazaretto. The view we give is taken from the rising ground, near the outer mouth of the harbour; in the distance are seen the prominent features of Athens itself, viz. the Acropolis and Lycabettus; while Pagnes and Pentelicus bound the prospect. The Piraeus is about five or six miles from Athens...In passing up the road, considerable remains of the celebrated "long walls"are to be perceived, which used in olden time to connect the city with the Piraeus, and which were so important as a defensive work'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The Piraeus, at Athens [Greece], 1850,' showcases the picturesque harbor of Piraeus as it appeared over a century and a half ago. The view, taken from a vantage point near the harbor's outer mouth, reveals the snug yet compact port with its narrow entrance, marked by stone piers, allowing safe passage for ships of considerable burden. The bustling town of Piraeus, with its good houses and consular establishments, can be seen along the shores, as well as the Lazaretto, an essential quarantine station. In the distance, the iconic landmarks of Athens rise majestically: the Acropolis and Lycabettus, with the mountains of Pagnes and Pentelicus forming a scenic backdrop. The Piraeus, about five or six miles from Athens, was a crucial trading hub during the 19th century, connecting the city with the Aegean Sea and the wider world. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a fascinating glimpse into the geography and history of this ancient port city. The long walls, remnants of the once formidable defensive structures that connected Athens with the Piraeus, can be discerned in the background, adding to the rich historical context of this scene.
