Created by Gold Tone, this unique piece features a translucent orange plastic handle and white plastic teeth. The back of the brush is adorned with elegant gold metal, embellished with a stunning decorative floral detail made of metal and rhinestones at the top, while a mirror graces the bottom. The accompanying packaging is equally exquisite - an original paper box in gold and black hues. On two long sides, bold black text proudly declares "A / Gold Tone / PRODUCT" while on the shorter openings we find "BIJOU / COMB & BRUSH / 1922" elegantly inscribed. Mae Reeves (1912-2016), an African-American trailblazer in millinery artistry, was renowned for her custom-made hats. Her iconic establishment, Maes Millinery Shop located in downtown Philadelphia, became one of the city's first businesses owned by an African American woman. This remarkable artifact not only represents fashion and style but also symbolizes Mae Reeves' significant contribution to African-American heritage. Preserved within the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), it serves as a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and artistic talent that defied societal barriers during a time when opportunities were limited for people of color.
