The Prince of Wales in the Terai: crossing a Nullah in the Jungle...1876. Creator: W. J. P
The Prince of Wales in the Terai: crossing a Nullah in the Jungle, facsimile of a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. The future King Edward VII hunting tigers in India....the elephant is very careful, feeling the ground with his trunk for the edge of the nullah, as in most cases it cannot be seen from the long grass. When the margin is reached he places both feet together, and they partly go down through the earth, which lets them down easily. The hind legs are bent to the ground in the attitude of a man on his knees. The trunk is then used to feel the bottom of the nullah to know if it is firm enough...the animal then steps cautiously across and begins the ascent on the other side. This it does slowly but surely, going down on its knees upon the earth above, and heaving its vast weight up by degrees, till it gains the level ground again. The howdah is often at an angle of 45 degrees, and the sportsman has to hold on by the sides..'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the future King Edward VII, also known as the Prince of Wales, during his hunting expedition in the Terai region of India in 1876. The Prince is shown crossing a nullah, or shallow watercourse, in the dense jungle, accompanied by an elephant. The elephant, with its trunk extended, carefully feels the edge of the nullah for a safe passage, its hind legs bent in a kneeling position. The Prince, seated in the howdah (a platform carried on an elephant), holds on tightly to the sides as the animal steps cautiously across the nullah, its massive weight shifting from one side to the other. The jungle's long grass obscures the nullah's edge, making the elephant's careful maneuvering essential for a safe crossing. The Prince's adventurous spirit and determination to conquer the challenges of the Indian wilderness are evident in this intriguing photograph. This sketch, originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, captures a moment in history, showcasing the Prince's hunting prowess and the unique challenges of the Indian jungle.
