The Pylon and Court of the Temple of Horus at Edfu, Egypt, 1900
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print transports us back to ancient Egypt, capturing the grandeur of the pylon and court of the Temple of Horus in Edfu. The temple, as we see it now, was completed in 57 BC but its construction began much earlier under Ptolemy III in 237 BC. Made entirely from sandstone, this architectural marvel stands tall against the African sky. The image is a stereoscopic card from a series called "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" with text by James H. Breasted. It provides us with a detailed glimpse into this sacred site dedicated to Horus, one of Egypt's most revered gods. The imposing pylon gate draws our attention first - an intricate structure adorned with hieroglyphs and reliefs depicting scenes from Egyptian mythology. As we enter through its gates into the vast courtyard beyond, we are surrounded by towering walls that exude an aura of religious significance. In this monochrome scene captured by Underwood & Underwood photographers, every detail comes alive – from the finely carved statues lining the walls to the majestic columns supporting them. We can almost feel ourselves stepping back in time as we explore this holy place where ancient Egyptians sought solace and connection with their deities. This photograph serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and devotion; it reminds us that even after centuries have passed since its creation
