EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the powerful presence of Richard I, King of England. Created by the talented artist George Vertue, this portrait captures the essence of a medieval monarch. Richard I, also known as Richard Coueur de Lion or the Lionheart, was an influential figure in English history. As the third son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, he reigned as King from 1189 to 1199 during the Angevin (Plantagenet) dynasty. The image portrays Richard with a regal crown atop his head and a cross pendant around his neck, symbolizing his devotion to Christianity. His stern expression reflects both his warrior spirit and determination as he led troops into battle during the Third Crusade. However, Richard's reign was not without challenges. He spent much of it abroad - first on crusade in the Holy Land and later imprisoned in Germany after being captured by Leopold V of Austria. The print also hints at his final fate: killed by an infected arrow wound while engaged in war with France. Through this remarkable engraving, George Vertue immortalizes King Richard I's legacy as a fearless ruler who fought for his country and faith. It serves as a reminder of England's rich medieval history and its iconic figures who shaped its destiny.
