The Right Hon. W. Cubitt, M.P. the new Lord Mayor, from a photograph by Mayall, 1860. The Right Hon. the Lord Mayor was born at Buxton, near Coltishall, in Norfolk, and in early life served about four years in the Royal Navy. In 1810, being then nineteen years of age, he turned his attention to commercial matters, and entered the building trade, which he carried on until within the last four years, and in which he realised an ample fortune in connexion with his brothers. The house of Cubitt is now one of the most eminent in the country...Mr. Cubitt's political opinions are those of an advanced Conservative, who looks to reforms as both desirable and necessary. He is a genuine supporter of Church and State; and yet, in 1855, he voted for the abolition of compulsory church rates...Mr. Cubitt's election to the mayoralty is very warmly hailed by a numerous circle of friends whose esteem he has long enjoyed. The right honourable gentleman has been a widower seven years, and he has suffered other domestic bereavements. His only son died, in 1841, at Cambridge, when about to take his degree, and his eldest daughter died six years ago'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

This striking photograph, taken by the renowned English photographer, Mayall, in 1860, captures The Right Hon. W. Cubitt, M.P., in his new role as Lord Mayor of London. Born in Buxton, near Coltishall, in Norfolk, Cubitt began his career in the Royal Navy at the young age of nineteen before transitioning to the building trade, where he achieved great success and fortune alongside his brothers. The Cubitt family name became synonymous with architectural excellence, and their firm remains one of the most esteemed in the country. Cubitt's political beliefs leaned towards advanced Conservatism, advocating for necessary reforms while maintaining a deep respect for Church and State. In 1855, he voted in favor of abolishing compulsory church rates, demonstrating his progressive stance. The news of Cubitt's election to the mayoralty was met with great enthusiasm from his numerous circle of friends, who held him in high esteem. A widower for seven years, Cubitt had also suffered other significant personal losses, including the death of his only son at Cambridge University in 1841 and his eldest daughter six years prior. Despite these tragedies, Cubitt's dedication to his duties and his unwavering commitment to London's prosperity continued to shine through.
