EDITORS COMMENTS
Image 1 of 6: Royal Procession with Raja Amar Singh (Reigned 1787-1798) of Thanjavur, c1790 This stunning 18th century opaque watercolor and gold on paper painting depicts a grand royal procession led by Raja Amar Singh of Thanjavur, also known as Maharaja Ramaswami Amarasimha Bhonsle (1762-1801), who reigned from 1787 to 1798. The Maratha ruler is shown seated on a richly decorated chariot, pulled by four horses, as he makes his way through the streets of Thanjavur in present-day Tamil Nadu, India. The Maratha Empire, which extended from the Deccan plateau in central India to the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, was a major power during the 18th and 19th centuries. Raja Amar Singh's regal attire reflects the opulence and grandeur of the Maratha court. He wears a long, flowing robe with intricate gold embroidery, a jeweled turban, and carries a parasol to shield himself from the sun. The procession is accompanied by a retinue of attendants, each carrying flags and banners bearing the insignia of the Maratha Empire. The British, who had established a presence in India through the British East India Company, are also represented in the procession, as indicated by the Union Jack flag and the banner of the Bhonsle dynasty's allies, the British East India Company's II Serfoji. This painting is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of India during the 18th century, a time of imperialism, political intrigue, and artistic innovation. It is now part of the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), providing a valuable insight into the history and art of Hindustan and the Maratha Empire.
