The Southern Party on board the Nimrod. 1909. Artist: James Murray
The Southern Party on board the Nimrod. 1909. Expedition members Frank Wild, Ernest Shackleton, Lieutenant Colonel Eric Marshall and Captain Jameson Adams. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Southern Party on board the Nimrod in 1909, during one of Ernest Shackleton's groundbreaking Antarctic expeditions. The image showcases four key members of the expedition: Frank Wild, Lieutenant Colonel Eric Marshall, Captain Jameson Adams, and of course, the renowned Anglo-Irish explorer himself. Shackleton's second expedition from 1907 to 1909 marked a significant milestone in exploration history as he and his companions reached an unprecedented Farthest South latitude at 88° S. Their remarkable feat brought them within a mere 97 geographical miles of the elusive South Pole. Additionally, this daring team scaled Mount Erebus, an active volcano in Antarctica. The photograph portrays these intrepid explorers with their bearded faces and disheveled appearances after enduring harsh conditions on their journey. It is a testament to their resilience and determination in pushing boundaries for scientific discovery. Ernest Shackleton received knighthood from King Edward VII for his extraordinary achievements but tragically passed away during his final oceanographic expedition at just 47 years old. This illustration comes from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I by E. H. Shackleton himself. It serves as a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit that fueled these early pioneers' quest for knowledge about our planet's most remote regions.
