EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we witness a momentous occasion in the annals of British history, as the Association for the Abolition of the Taxes on Knowledge presents a heartfelt testimonial to the Right Hon. Thomas Milner Gibson, M.P. The image, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1862, showcases a grand gathering, likely held in London, where Milner Gibson is celebrated for his unwavering commitment to the cause of repealing taxes on knowledge. The testimonial, a magnificent centerpiece designed by Flaxman and two elegant seven-light candelabras inspired by the late Sir C. Barry, is a testament to Milner Gibson's significant contributions as the Association's president for twelve years. The centerpiece bears an inscription, "Presented to the Right Hon. Thomas Milner Gibson, M.P., by the members and friends of the Association for the Repeal of the Taxes on Knowledge as a commemorative testimonial of his important services during twelve years as their president." The inscription continues to list the milestones achieved in the movement for the repeal of taxes on knowledge: the abolition of advertisement duty on August 4, 1853; the repeal of the compulsory stamp on newspapers on June 29, 1855; and the repeal of paper duty on October 1, 1861. This photograph encapsulates the spirit of triumph and achievement, as the Association honors Milner Gibson for his pivotal role in these historic victories.
