USS Maine, 1911
USS Maine, 1911. The USS Maine, a pre-dreadnought battleship, exploded and sank in Havana harbour, Cuba, on 15 February 1898, with the loss of 274 of her crew. The ship had been deployed to Cuba to protect American interests during a popular uprising against Spanish colonial rule on the island. Popular opinion in the United States was outraged by the sinking, which was blamed on a Spanish mine. A cofferdam was built around the wreck and water was pumped out, exposing the wreck by late 1911 to allow a second court of inquiry to inspect the damage and ascertain a cause for the sinking. The intact portion of the hull of the Maine was eventually refloated and ceremoniously scuttled at sea on 16 March 1912

EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia-toned print captures the haunting remnants of the USS Maine, a pre-dreadnought battleship that met a tragic fate in Havana harbor, Cuba. In 1898, during a time of popular uprising against Spanish colonial rule on the island, this American vessel was deployed to protect national interests. However, on February 15th of that year, disaster struck as an explosion tore through the ship's hull, leading to the loss of 274 crew members. The sinking of the USS Maine caused outrage across the United States and was attributed to a Spanish mine. To investigate further and determine the cause behind this devastating event, a cofferdam was constructed around the wreck. By late 1911, water had been pumped out from within it, revealing significant damage for a second court inquiry. Eventually, part of the Maine's hull was successfully refloated and ceremoniously scuttled at sea in March 1912. This photograph showcases not only the wreckage but also serves as a poignant reminder of lives lost and historical events that shaped relations between nations. Preserved in monochrome tones with hints of sepia warmth, this image transports us back to early twentieth-century Havana Harbor—a testament to both human ingenuity in raising sunken vessels and our collective desire for answers when tragedy strikes at sea.
