Utility Combined with Elegance, 1858. Artist: Captain HR Howard

Utility Combined with Elegance, 1858. This cartoon is one of very many in Punch during the mid-Victorian period which satirise womens fashions. One of Punchs favourite targets was the absurdity of the crinoline. Here, the ladys footman has to walk so far behind her in order not to tread on her skirts that the umbrella he carries is four times the size of an ordinary one and thus accommodates not only himself and his mistress, but a miscellany of street urchins. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 13, 1858

Utility Combined with Elegance, 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that offers a glimpse into the satirical world of mid-Victorian fashion. Created by Captain HR Howard for Punch magazine, this cartoon humorously mocks the absurdity of women's clothing during that era, particularly the crinoline. In this comical scene, we witness a lady accompanied by her footman who struggles to keep up due to the immense size of her skirts. To prevent stepping on her dress, he walks at a considerable distance behind her. The exaggerated nature of this situation is highlighted by the footman carrying an umbrella four times larger than usual. This oversized accessory not only shelters his mistress but also accommodates various street urchins who have seized the opportunity for some unexpected fun. The artist cleverly captures both utility and elegance in this artwork. While emphasizing how women's fashion often hindered practicality and mobility, it simultaneously showcases their desire to maintain an air of sophistication and refinement. Through its black-and-white engraving style, "Utility Combined with Elegance" transports us back to the 19th century, inviting us to reflect on societal norms and expectations surrounding gender roles and attire during that time period. This heritage image partnership print serves as a reminder of how satire can shed light on cultural practices while entertaining its audience through wit and creativity.
