EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning folio from a Ragamala, or Garland of Melodies, depicts Vasanta Ragini, the Second Wife of Dipak Raga, in an exuberant moment of amusement during a festival celebration between the late 17th century and the early 18th century. The unknown artist masterfully captures the essence of the scene with opaque watercolor and gold on paper. Vasanta Ragini is shown in a joyful dance, surrounded by a group of musicians and animals, including a peacock and a drummer playing the mridangam and manjira percussion instruments. The mountainous landscape in the background adds to the serene and picturesque setting. The Ragamala tradition originated in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the regions of Rajasthan and Hindoostan, and was an essential part of Hinduism and the celebration of various festivals, such as Holi. The paintings often depicted various ragas, or melodies, and their associated raginis, or female personifications. This particular folio showcases the Second Wife of Dipak Raga, Vasanta Ragini, who is often associated with the spring season and the god Krishna. The blue-skinned deity is believed to have played the flute and danced with the gopis, or milkmaids, in the forests of Vrindavan. The joy and merriment depicted in this scene reflect the playful and celebratory nature of Krishna's stories and the rich cultural heritage of India.
