View of Bilbao, Spain, from the railway station, 1862. Creator: Unknown
View of Bilbao, Spain, from the railway station, 1862. View...looking inland, of the maritime terminus of [the Bilbao and Tudela Railway]...This great work, of which the engineering difficulties have been so ably surmounted by the engineer-in-chief, Charles Vignoles, Esq. F.R.S. is mainly due to the enterprise and knowledge of sound commercial principles displayed by the merchants and citizens of Bilbao...the modern and ancient city [is] divided by the Nervion, the estuary of which river forms the port of Bilbao. The principal objects of architectural interest are the old church and bridge de San Anton...On the opposite bank of the stream are the remains of a Jesuit church...Bilbao is distant six miles from Portugalete, where the Nervion flows into the Bay of Biscay. From its contiguity to the sea, and its rapid communication by rail with the interior, it is becoming one of the most important ports of Spain'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862
