EDITORS COMMENTS
William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle (1628-1676), was a prominent figure in English history during the 17th century. This obituary portrait of the Duke was created by the English engraver Charles Turner in 1811, as part of the series "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second." Born into the Cavendish family, one of the most influential aristocratic houses in England, William Cavendish rose to prominence during the English Civil War as a Royalist commander. He played a significant role in the Battle of Newmarket in 1643, where he was captured by the Parliamentarians and imprisoned for several years. After his release, he went into exile in France, where he spent the next decade in the court of Louis XIV. Upon his return to England in 1660, Cavendish was restored to his titles and estates, and he became a favorite of King Charles II. He served as Lord Chamberlain and Lord President of the Council, and he was also a prolific writer, publishing several works on military strategy and politics. In this portrait, Cavendish is depicted in formal attire, wearing a black coat and white cravat, typical of the aristocratic dress of the time. The Duke's military background is evident in the sword at his side, and his noble status is indicated by the sash and star of the Order of the Garter around his neck. The portrait captures the essence of Cavendish as a powerful and influential figure in English history, both as a military leader and as a courtier and writer.
