EDITORS COMMENTS
The Wolf that Never Sleeps, 1899-1900. Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941) at Mafeking, ever watchful, living up to his Matebele name Mpeesi (The Wolf That Never Sleeps). In this photo print, we witness the resolute gaze of a war hero during the 2nd Boer War. As the defender of Mafeking under siege by the Boers from October 14th, 1899 until its relief on May 19th, 1900 by Field Marshal Roberts, Baden-Powell earned fame and admiration. This image captures not only a moment in history but also reveals the essence of British colonialism and military prowess. Dressed in his distinguished military uniform with hat tilted slightly downwards, Baden-Powell stands beneath a full moon bathed in ethereal moonlight. His thoughtful expression reflects both patience and determination as he waits for any sign of danger. Beyond his wartime achievements lies an enduring legacy: after the war's end, Baden-Powell went on to found two influential youth organizations - Boy Scouts (1909) and Girl Guides (1910). This photograph serves as a testament to his visionary leadership and commitment to shaping young minds. Through this black-and-white portrait captured by Ann Ronan Pictures, we are transported back to South Africa in the early twentieth century. The image evokes feelings of respect for those who defend their beliefs against all odds while reminding us that even heroes need moments of contemplation amidst chaos.
