EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and jubilation of the Banquet Crossbowmens Guild Celebration Treaty. The scene is set in Amsterdam's Headquarters of the Crossbowmens Civic Guard, where a feast is being held to commemorate the conclusion of the peace treaty of Munster on June 18,1648. The image showcases a diverse group of individuals engaged in merriment and camaraderie. Captain Cornelis Jansz Witsen stands prominently with a silver drinking horn, while lieutenant Johan Oetgens van Waveren warmly shakes his hand. Surrounding them are various members of the guild, including sergeants, ensigns, and drummers. Intricate details bring this historical moment to life - from tin plates and roemers adorning the table to military flags proudly displayed throughout the room. A poem by Jan Vos graces a large drum at center stage. Through open windows, one catches glimpses of Amsterdam's bustling streets and even spots het Lam brewery on Singel Avenue. Adding to the festivities is a woman presenting a sumptuous turkey pie. This print not only immortalizes an important event but also offers insight into 17th-century Dutch society - its love for celebration, its pride in citizen soldiery, and its appreciation for artistry. It serves as both a reminder of past triumphs and an invitation to celebrate unity amidst conflict.
