EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historic pass card titled "Pass card part Elbe Weser Jadeboezem Pass Iade" meticulously prepared by Jan Luyken in Amsterdam between 1681 and 1799. The pass card covers a significant stretch of the Elbe, Weser, and Jadeboezem rivers, from Stade to their mouths into the North Sea. The print features intricate details that transport us back in time. In the top left corner, a detailed map of the Elbe near Hamburg and its surroundings captivates our attention. On the bottom left side, an ornate cartouche displays the title of the pass card along with publisher information and markings for shallows in the river Elbe. Delightful putti adorn this remarkable piece of art; one is seen painting while another waves a flag proudly. A third putto blows on a trumpet as if announcing important news or guiding ships through treacherous waters. In addition to these enchanting elements, we find three compass roses indicating directions, with north positioned below them. To the right, there is a list of shallows and markings specifically for the river Weser framed by an intricately designed hunt scene featuring hares. This stunning print not only captures historical significance but also serves as a testament to Jan Luyken's exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. It offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both artistry and navigational expertise from centuries past.
