This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a magnificent triumphal arch adorned with lush foliage and mounted troops. The temporary decoration was created to mark the grand entry of Pope Clement VIII in Bologna during the years 1598 and 1599. The etching, expertly executed by Italian artist Guido Reni, measures approximately 8 7/16 by 5 13/16 inches (214 by 147 cm) on a trimmed sheet. It is part of the plate series produced for the 1599 edition of "Descrittione de gli Apparati fatti per la venuta di N. S. Papa Clemente VIII" a book that meticulously describes the elaborate festivities organized for Pope Clement's arrival. Reni's artistic prowess shines through in this particular piece as he skillfully captures every intricate detail of the decorations and event. The nine etchings included in his illustrations beautifully depict the splendor and grandeur surrounding Pope Clement's visit.
