EDITORS COMMENTS
Angelica Kauffmann, the Swiss-born artist who made Rome her home in the late 18th century, is depicted in this portrait in traditional Swiss attire. Dated between 1741 and 1807, this image captures the artist in her youth, before she left her native land for the artistic and cultural mecca of Italy. Kauffmann's elegant and refined appearance is accentuated by the intricate details of her Swiss costume. She wears a high-waisted, voluminous skirt, adorned with delicate fur trimming and plaited trimmings. A traditional Swiss hat, with its distinctive tall crown and wide brim, sits atop her head, adding a touch of rustic charm to her sophisticated appearance. Born in 1741 in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland, Kauffmann was a prodigious artist from a young age. She began her artistic training in her hometown before moving to Italy, where she became a member of the prestigious Accademia di San Luca in Rome. Kauffmann's talent for painting, particularly her ability to capture the human form with great sensitivity and emotion, earned her a reputation as one of the leading artists of her time. She was a favorite of the European aristocracy, and her portraits and historical scenes were sought after by collectors throughout Europe. Despite her success, Kauffmann remained deeply connected to her Swiss roots. She often incorporated elements of Swiss folklore and history into her work, and her self-portraits in traditional Swiss costume serve as a reminder of her humble beginnings and the rich cultural heritage that shaped her artistic vision.
