EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne of Bohemia, the first queen of Richard II of England, is depicted in this beautiful 15th-century painting. Born in 1366, Anne was the daughter of King Charles IV of Bohemia and his wife, Elizabeth of Pomerania. In 1382, at the age of just 15, she was married to Richard II, who was then only 14 years old. Anne's reign as queen was marked by her intercession on behalf of the city of London. During her husband's reign, London experienced significant unrest, and Anne used her influence to negotiate peace between the king and the city's citizens. Her efforts were successful, and she was able to secure the release of several Londoners who had been imprisoned by the king. Anne's intercession earned her the respect and admiration of the Londoners, and she was known for her kindness and generosity. She was also a patron of the arts and supported scholars and artists, including the famous writer Geoffrey Chaucer. This painting, believed to be by the anonymous artist known as the Master of the Anon Englands, captures Anne's regal beauty and grace. She is depicted wearing a richly decorated robe and holding a scepter, symbols of her royal status. The intricate details of her clothing and the delicate rendering of her features show the skill of the artist. Anne of Bohemia's reign as queen was brief, as she died in 1394 at the age of 28, leaving behind a legacy of peace and goodwill. Her intercession on behalf of London and her support of the arts continue to be remembered in English history.
