EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus (1489-1557), a pivotal figure in Scottish and English history. Known as the "Wizard Earl," Angus rose to prominence following his marriage to Margaret Tudor, sister of King Henry VIII, in 1503. Their union, which was arranged to strengthen diplomatic ties between Scotland and England, set the stage for a lifetime of complicated political intrigue and in-fighting. Born into the powerful Douglas clan, Angus was a skilled diplomat and military leader. However, his marriage to Margaret Tudor, who was also the widow of King James IV of Scotland, sparked controversy and resistance from various factions within both countries. Angus's tenure as regent for the young James V of Scotland, during which he attempted to assert English influence over Scottish affairs, further fueled tensions. Despite these challenges, Angus remained a formidable presence in the political landscape of both Scotland and England. He played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of London in 1514, which recognized the English claim to the Scottish throne. However, his actions also contributed to the eventual breakdown of Anglo-Scottish relations and the outbreak of the Rough Wooing, a series of wars between Scotland and England over the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots, to the future King Francis II of France. This portrait, which dates from the period of Angus's marriage to Margaret Tudor, offers a glimpse into the complex and tumultuous world of late medieval Scottish and English politics. With his piercing gaze and resolute expression, the Earl of Angus emerges as a figure of intrigue and determination, emblematic of the power struggles and shifting alliances that marked this tumultuous era.
