EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment an Avre, or Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers, moves through close country during the final stages of World War Two in Europe, in 1945. The Avre, a Churchill tank modified with a bulldozer blade and a mine flail, was a vital asset to the Allied forces in the European theatre. The vehicle, followed closely by a Sherman tank, is seen here making its way through the dense foliage, likely clearing a path for the advancing Allied troops. Maj Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, of the 3/4 County of London Yeomanry Sharpshooters, compiled this photograph album containing 211 images documenting his experiences during the war. The album provides a unique and personal perspective on the events of 1944-1945, offering a glimpse into the daily life and challenges faced by the soldiers on the ground. The Avre played a crucial role in the Allied advance through the European countryside, enabling the troops to overcome obstacles such as mines, trees, and other debris that could hinder their progress. The vehicle's versatility and power made it an essential tool in the Allied arsenal, and its presence in this photograph serves as a reminder of the vital role the Royal Engineers played in the success of the Allied forces during World War Two.
