EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking cabinet card captures Sir Henry Bartle Frere (1815-1884), a prominent British colonial administrator, adorned with his numerous honors and medals. Frere's impressive military and political career spanned over four decades, with significant contributions in India and Africa. Born in London, Frere joined the British Army in 1831 and served in the First Burmese War (1824-1826). He later became a member of the Indian Civil Service in 1836. Frere's tenure as the Governor of Bombay Presidency (1862-1867) marked a period of significant reforms and modernization. He introduced the Bombay Police Act, which established a modern police force, and the Bombay Tenancy Act, which protected the rights of tenants against arbitrary eviction. In 1877, Frere was appointed as the High Commissioner of South Africa, where he played a crucial role in the Anglo-Zulu War (1879). He led the British forces to victory against the Zulu army at the Battle of Ulundi, resulting in the annexation of the Zulu Kingdom. Frere's governance in South Africa was marked by a policy of assimilation and the implementation of British law and order. This photograph, taken in 1884, depicts Frere wearing the sash of the Order of the Star of India and the Order of the Bath, signifying his high-ranking position in the British colonial administration. The various medals on his chest represent his military and civilian honors, including the Order of the Star of India, the Order of the Bath, and the Burma Medal. Sir Henry Bartle Frere's legacy continues to be remembered as a significant figure in British colonial history, particularly in India and Africa.
