EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the chaos and intensity of the First Battle of Bull Run, also known as First Manassas, which took place on July 21, 1861. This was the first major military engagement of the American Civil War and saw the Confederate army, led by General P.G.T. Beauregard, defeat the Union forces under General Irvin McDowell. The Battle of Bull Run was a significant turning point in the war, as it shattered the illusion that the Union army would easily triumph over the Confederacy. The battle took place in the Bull Run River valley, just 25 miles west of Washington D.C., and attracted large crowds of spectators who had come to watch the Union army's victory parade. However, the Confederate forces managed to launch a surprise attack, catching the Union army off guard and resulting in a rout. The scene depicted in this photograph shows the aftermath of the battle, with Confederate soldiers advancing through the thick smoke and chaos of the battlefield. The Union soldiers, who had retreated in disarray, can be seen in the background, fleeing the scene. The Confederate victory at Bull Run boosted morale in the Confederacy and gave them the confidence to continue fighting. This historical photograph, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, is a poignant reminder of the significant events that shaped the course of the American Civil War. The First Battle of Bull Run was a major victory for the Confederate forces and marked the beginning of a long and brutal conflict that would last for over four years.
