EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the essence of Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bessières, a pivotal figure in the French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars. Born in 1768, Bessières rose through the ranks to become a Marshal of France and Duke of Istria. He fought alongside Napoleon Bonaparte in some of the most significant campaigns of the era, including Egypt, Spain, and Russia. This beautiful 1853 portrait was created by the skilled hand of Henri-Franҫois Riesener, after an original painting by Pierre-Alexandre Edmond Hedouin. The Romanticism style of the artwork is evident in the bold use of color and the upright, vertical composition. The painting was completed during the 19th century, but the subject's military uniform and regal bearing transport us back to the Napoleonic era. The portrait is currently housed in the Palace of Versailles, in the Le Hameau de Marmarouche, in the Yvelines region of France. The outdoor setting, bathed in daylight and illuminated by the sunlight, adds to the grandeur and majesty of the portrait. Bessières' intense gaze and strong posture convey a sense of determination and leadership, making this a captivating and historically significant work of art.
