EDITORS COMMENTS
Big Bertha," affectionately named for its massive size, was a groundbreaking artillery piece used by the German army during World War I. This historic photograph, taken in 1914, captures the awe-inspiring presence of this giant cannon as it towers over soldiers in a military training ground. At an impressive length of 15 inches and a caliber of 42 centimeters, Big Bertha was the largest artillery piece of its time. Its immense size and power made it a formidable weapon in the hands of the German military. The cannon was designed to fire a large, heavy projectile, capable of causing significant damage to enemy fortifications. The construction of Big Bertha began in secret in 1913, and it was first used in combat during the siege of the Belgian fortress of Liège in August 1914. The cannon's first shot, which struck the fortress's Citadel of Belfort, marked a turning point in the war and demonstrated the devastating power of this new type of artillery. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, allowing us to witness the immense scale and power of Big Bertha firsthand. The soldiers in the image appear small in comparison to the cannon, emphasizing its dominance and the fearsome might of the German military during this period. Big Bertha's legacy extends beyond its military significance, as it represents a pivotal moment in the history of artillery warfare. Its design and capabilities influenced the development of future artillery pieces and shaped the way wars were fought in the 20th century. This photograph serves as a reminder of the technological advancements and innovations that have shaped the course of history, and the enduring power of human ingenuity and determination.
