Taken during the fateful day of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916 at Thiepval, France, this image immortalizes a moment in time that forever changed the course of World War I history. Born on 15th April 1886 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Frankland Bell enlisted in the British Army in 1903, joining the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. His exceptional leadership and courage were quickly recognized, and he rose through the ranks to become a Captain by the outbreak of World War I. On 1st July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, the 9th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers faced heavy enemy fire near Thiepval. Amidst the chaos and carnage, Frankland Bell led his men with unwavering determination, repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire to encourage his soldiers and direct their efforts.
