EDITORS COMMENTS
Casablanca, Morocco, 1907: A Moment Before the Storm This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the tranquil scene of Casablanca's bustling port on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, just days before the outbreak of the Moroccan Campaign in 1907. The image, taken from a vantage point overlooking the town, showcases the picturesque rooftops of the buildings lining the harbor, with the vast expanse of the ocean stretching out behind. However, the serenity of this moment was soon shattered. On July 30, 1907, nine European port employees, including five French nationals, were tragically killed in Casablanca. In response, the French Cruiser Galilee arrived before the town on August 1, bringing with it the promise of protection for the French nationals residing there. The Moroccan Campaign, also known as the "Dahir of Algeciras," was a military intervention by European powers to assert their influence over Morocco and protect their interests in the region. The conflict lasted from 1907 to 1912 and ultimately resulted in the establishment of a French protectorate in Morocco. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the historical significance of Casablanca and the events that shaped its past. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to witness a moment of peace before the tumultuous events that were to unfold. The roofs of the buildings, now faded and weathered, stand as silent witnesses to the rich history of this North African town, which continues to be a vibrant and bustling hub of activity to this day.
