EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, an illustration by William Gibb from A.J. Hipkins' "Musical Instruments, Historic, Rare and Unique," published in Edinburgh in 1888, showcases a fascinating juxtaposition of Chinese fiddles and Thai woodwind instruments. The image, which is not to be confused with the musical instrument company of the same name, offers a glimpse into the rich musical heritage of Thailand and China during the late 19th century. At the heart of the composition are two Chinese fiddles, or erhu, each adorned with intricate carvings of mythical creatures and elaborate enamel and gold decorations. The erhu, a two-stringed instrument, is a vital component of Chinese traditional music and has been in use for over a thousand years. Its unique sound, which can evoke both melancholic and joyful emotions, is produced by the bowed strings and the sympathetic strings that resonate when the bow is drawn across the main strings. Surrounding the Chinese fiddles are various Thai woodwind instruments, including the sawtai, siamesefiddle, sawduang, sawoo, thaiklui, thaipee, oboe, and Javanese instruments. Thai music, like its Chinese counterpart, is steeped in history and tradition, and these woodwind instruments play a significant role in its diverse and captivating soundscapes. The sawtai, or Thai flute, is a bamboo instrument that is popular in both classical and folk music. Its slender, curved shape and six finger holes allow for a wide range of notes and expressive playing. The sawoo, or Thai oboe, is another essential woodwind instrument in Thai music, characterized by its double reed and cylindrical bore. This chromolithograph, which is a testament to the beauty and diversity of musical instruments from Thailand and China, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of music to connect and inspire us across cultures and time periods.
