EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the moment of tragedy as Paul Doumer, the newly elected President of France in 1931, is assassinated by a White Russian named Paul Gorgoulov on the steps of the Paris Opera House on February 6, 1932. The privacy of the President was invaded as the press eagerly documented the unfolding events, their cameras flashing in the chaotic scene. Doumer, a prominent French colonial administrator and politician, had only assumed the presidency a few months prior, succeeding the controversial Gaston Doumergue. His election was met with hope and optimism, as he was seen as a stabilizing figure in the tumultuous political climate of the time. However, this optimism was short-lived as Doumer was attacked while attending the opera with his wife. Gorgoulov, a Russian emigrant and former Bolshevik, had a long history of mental instability and a deep-seated grudge against the French government. He had previously attempted to assassinate Doumer in 1931, but was unsuccessful. In this image, Doumer is seen slumping over in his seat, a pool of blood forming at his feet. Gorgoulov, wearing a fur hat and holding a revolver, stands over him, a look of determination etched on his face. The opera house, once a symbol of French culture and sophistication, is now a backdrop to this shocking and violent event. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the intrusive nature of the press and the unpredictability of history. It also serves as a reminder of the human cost of political instability and the fragility of peace and security in the early 20th century.
