EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of resolution as Spanish Jesuit missionary Francisco Javier, or Xavier, confronts hostile natives in Travancore, India during the 16th century. Born in 1506 in the Basque region of Spain, Xavier joined the Society of Jesus in 1534 and was sent to India as part of the Jesuit mission to spread Christianity. Upon arrival in 1542, Xavier encountered significant resistance from the local population, who were not only resistant to the new faith but also protective of their own traditions and way of life. In this powerful scene, Xavier, depicted with a halo and holding a crucifix, stands firm against the charging natives. His unwavering determination and unyielding faith are evident in his steadfast posture, as he raises the cross above his head in a gesture of peace and love. The natives, depicted with fierce expressions and brandishing weapons, appear momentarily taken aback by Xavier's courage and conviction. Despite the initial resistance, Xavier's missionary efforts eventually bore fruit, and he is credited with converting thousands of people to Christianity in India and other parts of Asia. He died in 1552, but his legacy continues to inspire generations of missionaries and advocates for religious freedom and understanding. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and triumphs of the early Christian missionaries in India and the enduring power of faith and determination in the face of adversity.
