EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the George Inn, a historic Tudor-style pub located in the heart of Southwark, London. First mentioned in records in 1554, the inn was then owned by Mr. Charles Collet, a Member of Parliament for Southwark. The George Inn's rich history is steeped in tradition, and it was a popular gathering place for locals and travelers alike. The inn, with its galleried facade and wooden beams, exudes an air of charm and nostalgia. The 16th-century structure was unfortunately destroyed in the Great Fire of Southwark in 1676. However, the inn was rebuilt just a year later, in approximately 1677, retaining much of its original character. The George Inn was known for its warm hospitality, offering food and drink to weary travelers. Its proximity to the nearby playhouses made it a popular watering hole for thespians and theatergoers. The inn's history is intertwined with that of Charles Dickens, who famously featured it in his novel "Our Mutual Friend." This print, captured in the 1930s, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of horse-drawn carriages, galleried inns, and the bustling energy of Southwark's vibrant community. The George Inn stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of London's rich history and its commitment to preserving its past.
