EDITORS COMMENTS
This carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph features the Italian patriot, Giuseppe Garibaldi, taken in the year 1882. Born on July 4, 1807, in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Garibaldi is celebrated as a hero in Italian history for his role in the unification of Italy. Garibaldi's revolutionary spirit was ignited during the Italian Wars of Independence in the 1840s and 1850s. He gained fame for leading the "Thousand," a volunteer army, in the Expedition of the Thousand, which aimed to overthrow the Neapolitan monarchy and establish a unified Italian state. The success of this campaign paved the way for the eventual unification of Italy under King Victor Emmanuel II in 1861. In this photograph, Garibaldi is depicted in military uniform, exuding an air of confidence and determination. His piercing gaze and strong jawline convey the intensity and passion that drove him to lead his people in their fight for freedom and self-determination. The background is simple, with a plain wall and a few pieces of furniture, allowing the focus to remain on the subject. Garibaldi's legacy extends beyond Italian unification. He also played a significant role in the Brazilian Revolution of 1889, leading a volunteer force known as the "Green Shirts" to help overthrow the monarchy and establish the Republic of Brazil. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Garibaldi's unwavering commitment to the cause of liberty and his ability to inspire others made him a true icon of Italian and world history. This CDV photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian patriot who dedicated his life to the pursuit of freedom and self-determination for his people.
