EDITORS COMMENTS
Grattan Dalton, the Notorious American Train Robber of the 19th Century This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Grattan Dalton, an American train robber who made headlines in the late 1800s. Born in the western United States during the 1860s, Dalton and his brothers formed a notorious gang of outlaws who became infamous for their daring train robberies and bank raids. During the 1880s, the Dalton gang terrorized the Midwest, robbing trains and banks with a level of audacity that left law enforcement baffled. Grattan Dalton, the eldest brother, was said to be the mastermind behind their criminal exploits. With his piercing eyes and steely gaze, Dalton exuded an air of confidence and cunning that belied his criminal past. Despite the best efforts of law enforcement, the Dalton gang continued to elude capture for several years. However, their luck ran out in 1892 when they attempted to rob the First National Bank of Coffeyville, Kansas. In a fierce gunfight, Grattan Dalton was killed along with two of his brothers. The Dalton gang's reign of terror came to an end, but their legend lived on. This photograph of Grattan Dalton offers a rare glimpse into the life of a notorious American outlaw, a man who defied the law and captured the imagination of the public during the late 19th century. His story serves as a reminder of a time when the line between crime and adventure was often blurred, and the allure of the wild west continued to captivate the American people.
