EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken in 1931, we find Irene Cholmondeley, a young debutante, and her stepmother, Ina Marjorie Gwendolin Pelly, gazing intently into a small aquarium. The image, captured by the renowned portrait photographer Madame Yevonde, offers a glimpse into the intriguing dynamic between the two women. Irene Cholmondeley, the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Lord George Hugo Cholmondeley, was making her debut into society that year. Her stepmother, Ina Pelly, was an amateur dancer who had recently organized a Pavane at a fete held at Knole, the ancient English stately home. The Pavane, a formal dance popular during the Renaissance, added an air of elegance and sophistication to the event. The photograph shows Irene and Ina standing side by side, their eyes fixed on the aquarium filled with colorful fish. The reason for their fascination with the aquarium remains a mystery, but their shared interest creates a moment of connection between them. Their attire reflects the fashion of the early 1930s, with Irene wearing a elegant white gown and Ina donning a stylish dress adorned with floral patterns. This photograph, taken during a time when debutantes were making their entrance into society, offers a glimpse into the lives of these two women and their unique relationship. The image, with its enigmatic subject matter and stunning composition, is a captivating reminder of the history and elegance of the 1930s.
