This print showcases Jean Louis de Nogaret de La Valette, Duc d'Epernon (1554-1642), a renowned French military commander and statesman of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born into the noble Nogaret family, Jean rose to prominence under King Henry III of France, serving as his trusted advisor and military leader. Duc d'Epernon's military career began in earnest during the Italian Wars, where he distinguished himself in numerous battles. He was instrumental in the defense of Marseille against the Ottoman Turks in 1600, earning him the title of Grand Master of Artillery. His strategic prowess and tactical brilliance continued to serve France well during the French Wars of Religion, as he skillfully navigated the complex political landscape and maintained order in the face of religious strife. As a statesman, Jean d'Epernon was known for his diplomatic abilities and his commitment to the welfare of his people. He served as the Governor of Languedoc and the Constable of France, using his positions to promote economic development and maintain peace in the region. In 1614, he was appointed as the Grand Master of France, a position that placed him second in the line of succession to the throne. This print, featuring Jean d'Epernon's autograph, is a testament to his storied career and enduring legacy.
