EDITORS COMMENTS
John Bacon the Younger (1777-1859): A Visionary English Sculptor of the Romantic Era John Bacon the Younger, born on June 12, 1777, in London, England, was an accomplished sculptor of the Romantic period. He was the son of renowned sculptor John Bacon the Elder (1740-1799), who had a significant influence on his artistic development. This evocative portrait of John Bacon the Younger, captured in the prime of his career, showcases his striking profile and the intensity of his gaze. The artist's hands are positioned on a scroll, suggesting his deep connection to the world of knowledge and creativity. Bacon the Younger studied under his father and later under the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. He began his professional career in the late 18th century, a time of great artistic innovation and change. His work was characterized by its naturalism, emotion, and sensitivity, reflecting the Romantic ideals of his era. Some of his most famous works include the marble statue of "The Three Graces" (1813), which can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the monument to Lord Nelson (1808) in St. Paul's Cathedral. Bacon's ability to capture the human form with both grace and emotion made him a highly sought-after sculptor in his time. Despite his success, Bacon the Younger faced numerous challenges throughout his career. He was known for his controversial personal life, including a scandalous love affair with the wife of a prominent politician. This, along with financial difficulties, led to a decline in his reputation and a period of relative obscurity towards the end of his life. John Bacon the Younger passed away on February 13, 1859, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences today. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life and talent of a visionary English sculptor who helped shape the artistic landscape of the Romantic era.
