EDITORS COMMENTS
John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee, also known as Bonny Dundee, is depicted in this evocative photograph print. Born in Scotland in 1649, Dundee rose to prominence during the turbulent political landscape of the late 17th century, becoming a hero to many for his unwavering support of the Stuart cause. Dundee's allegiance to the Stuarts began during the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, and he continued to champion their cause throughout the years of political upheaval that followed. In 1678, he led a successful uprising against the English in Dundee, earning himself the nickname "Bonny Dundee" - a term of endearment that spoke to his charisma and military prowess. Despite his popularity among the Scottish people, Dundee's actions were not without consequence. In 1684, he was implicated in the Rye House Plot, a failed assassination attempt on King Charles II and his brother, James, Duke of York. Dundee was forced to flee to France, where he joined the exiled Stuart court. When the opportunity arose to return to Scotland and lead a Jacobite rebellion against the English in 1689, Dundee answered the call. He gathered an army and marched south to confront the English forces at the Battle of Killiecrankie. The battle was a hard-fought one, with both sides suffering heavy losses. In the end, Dundee was killed in the thick of the fighting, but his death only served to galvanize the Scottish people further in their support of the Stuart cause. This photograph print captures the essence of Bonny Dundee, a man who defied the odds and became a symbol of Scottish resistance and national pride. Despite his tragic end at the Battle of Killiecrankie, his legacy continues to inspire generations of Scots, and his story remains an important chapter in the rich tapestry of Scottish history.
