EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a fateful encounter between the British home front and the German air force during World War II. Taken on 27 July 1940 in the picturesque village of Belmont, Gloucestershire, in the heart of the English West Country, the image shows the wreckage of a Junkers JU88, a formidable German bomber, which had met its end during an air raid. The twisted metal and shattered remnants of the aircraft bear testament to the brutal force of the collision, while the surrounding lush greenery and tranquil landscape serve as a stark contrast to the chaos and destruction wrought by the war. The scene was witnessed by local resident Margaret Woodyear, who, along with other members of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS), had been manning an anti-aircraft battery in the area. The photograph is believed to have been taken shortly after the JU88 was shot down, with the smoke still rising from the wreckage. The event would have been a harrowing reminder of the realities of war for the local community, who, despite their efforts to defend their homes and loved ones, were all too often on the receiving end of the enemy's attacks. This poignant image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of uncertainty and adversity, and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the conflict. The Junkers JU88, a symbol of the enemy's might, lies defeated in the grass, a poignant reminder of the human cost of war.
