EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time from the early 20th century, featuring Kathleen Bruce and her young son, Peter Markham Scott, in Kathleen's studio in 1912. Kathleen, the wife of the renowned British explorer, Robert Falcon Scott, and an accomplished artist in her own right, is seen in the prime of her creative career, surrounded by her artistic tools and works in progress. Her son, Peter, who would later become a celebrated ornithologist and conservationist, gazes intently at one of the paintings, perhaps already showing an innate curiosity and affinity for the arts. Robert Falcon Scott, who famously led the Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole in 1910-1913, met Kathleen in 1907, and they married in 1911. The couple's shared love for the arts and the natural world influenced each other's work throughout their lives. Kathleen's paintings often depicted the landscapes and wildlife of Antarctica, inspired by her husband's expeditions. Peter, born in 1909, grew up to follow in the footsteps of both his parents, becoming an accomplished artist and ornithologist. He is best known for his work with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, which he co-founded in 1946, and his contributions to the field of conservation. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the personal lives of these historical figures, showcasing the strong bond between mother and son and the artistic legacy that was passed down through generations.
