EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases an Early Motorised Fire Engine of the London Fire Brigade (LFB), manufactured by Merryweather and Sons Limited in 1909. One of the first self-propelled petrol motor fire engines used by the LFB, it represents a significant milestone in the evolution of firefighting technology. The power unit of this machine served dual purposes, powering both the propulsion and the pumping functions. Merryweather and Sons, a renowned British fire engineering firm, had built the very first motor fire engine eight years prior for the Rothschild estate in France. The crew, dressed in their Edwardian uniforms, are seen standing proudly next to their machine at the LFB headquarters in Southwark. The vehicle's tank, located below the driver's seat, holds a sixty-gallon soda-acid first-aid extinguisher. This motorised appliance, with its powerful engine and advanced pumping capabilities, revolutionised the way the London Fire Brigade responded to emergencies. The sepia-toned image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the early days of motorised fire engines and the essential role they played in the city's firefighting history.
