EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration by C.E. Turner depicts the exhilarating moment of London's first greyhound racing event at White City in the 1920s. Greyhound racing, which had originated in Ireland in the late 18th century, had gained significant popularity in the UK by the early 20th century. After its successful debut at Belle Vue in Manchester in 1926, the sport quickly spread to other major cities, including London. In this image, a large crowd gathers around the track, their eyes fixed on the starting gates. The anticipation is palpable as the greyhounds, poised and ready, wait for the starter's command. The sleek, muscular dogs are a sight to behold, their ears pricked forward and their eyes focused intently on the rabbit lure that will send them dashing around the track. The starter, dressed in a smart uniform and holding a raised flag, stands at the ready. The tension in the air is electric, and as the flag drops, the greyhounds burst forth from the gates, their powerful legs propelling them forward in a blur of motion. The race is on! London's White City greyhound stadium, which opened in 1934, was one of several that were built during the 1920s and 1930s. These stadiums became popular destinations for entertainment, offering a thrilling and affordable alternative to traditional horse racing. Greyhound racing continued to be a beloved pastime in the UK well into the latter half of the 20th century, and this illustration serves as a fascinating glimpse into the history of this unique and enduring sport.
