EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait, Mary Countess of Fauconberg, born Mary Cromwell, is depicted in the prime of her life. Daughter of Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, and his second wife, Elizabeth Bourchier, Mary was born in 1637. Her father's tumultuous reign came to an end in 1659, and the monarchy was restored under Charles II. Mary's mother remarried, to Sir William Spring, and Mary grew up in the household of her stepfather. In 1662, Mary married Thomas Belasyse, Earl of Fauconberg, a prominent courtier and soldier. The marriage brought her into the circle of the English nobility, and Mary became a patron of the arts and a respected figure in society. In this portrait, she wears an ornate gown of deep blue, adorned with lace and pearls, and her hair is styled in an intricate arrangement of curls and braids. Her expression is serene and self-assured, reflecting her confidence and poise. Mary Countess of Fauconberg lived through a period of great change in English history, from the Commonwealth to the Restoration, and from the reigns of Charles II and James II to the Glorious Revolution of 1688. She died in 1713, leaving behind a legacy as a gracious and influential noblewoman. This portrait, a testament to her beauty and status, remains a valuable record of a fascinating historical figure.
